Women History Month Highlight: Vanessa Nakate
I'm always proud to see people from my country excelling and doing things beyond the confines of country lines. Vanessa is a young activist from Uganda raising awareness on the dangers of climate change. At 26 years old, she's a prominent figure in Africa that is often selected to represent and educate others about the effects of climate change. It's because of individuals like Vanessa that the world is becoming more alert about the dangers of global warming and that we need to be more cognizant of the choices we make now because our great grand children may not have a future.
One of the reasons we chose to make Ohhs out of bamboo is because of its sustainability. Bamboo requires zero irrigation for growth. In addition to the bamboo Ohhs also have the signature recycled non-woven fabric on the sides. Our goal from inception has always been to use sustainable fabrics and packaging. Climate change is real, and we owe it to ourselves and future generations to do better now. We certainly have a long way to go. There are lot of things that we're still learning as a community. We're getting smarter with our technology and new items are being rolled out. There's not a week that passes by where I don't research what else is out there that we can use to create beautiful and valuable eco-friendly products for our consumers.
Vanessa believes that we cannot have climate justice without gender equality. According to Vanessa, women and girls are disproportionally affected by climate change. Therefore, it's imperative to educate them about the effects of climate change and empower them with skills for the future. I couldn't love this message any more. In the words of Queen B, "who runs the world?!" "GIRLS"
We donate a percentage of our profits to non profits that provide menstrual resources to school aged girls because we don't want biology to be the reason why young girls drop out of school. Education is pivotal for women. Knowledge empowers us to stand in our strength without fear or ambiguity.
